Xeriscape

I am often asked if all I do is xeriscape design. While the answer is simple, it can be a difficult question for me to answer because there is still a misconception about the term 'xeriscape'. Some still think of it as a style. Xeriscape is not a style, but more of a concept. The concept is water conservation. It is about reducing sod where sod is not used and placing plants with like water requirements together, no matter what the style is. So, my answer to that question is YES! I can create a water wise garden that has the look of an English Garden, Rustic, or Natural/Native. Whatever my client is looking for.

The term Xeriscape was coined by the Denver Water Board in the early '80's. 'Xeri' is greek for dry. It is possible to have a colorful garden with movement, texture and flower color that is drought tolerant. There are many wonderful trees, shrubs, and perennials that can be used to create a beautiful landscape. With that in mind, the following are the 7 basic principles of Xeriscape.

1. PLANNING AND DESIGN
Take the time to plan out your design before you start to plant. Create different water use zones and allocate the water where it will most directly contribute to the beauty and comfort of your home.

2. LIMIT TURF AREAS TO A PRACTICAL SIZE
Limit the size of lawn areas and use native grasses as much as possible. Buffalo Grass is an excellent drought-tolerant alternative to thirsty Blue Grass.

3. USE APPROPRIATE PLANTS
Use xeric plants for hot, dry south and west facing areas. Use plants that like more moisture along north and east facing slopes and walls. Don’t mix plants with high and low watering needs in the same planting area.

4. IMPROVE THE SOIL
Add organic matter in the form of compost whenever you plant

5. USE MULCHES
By covering the soil’s surface with organic mulch, you help retain valuable soil moisture and keep weeds down. Mulching also helps capture rainwater by allowing hard rains to soak in to the soil instead of running off into the street and drainage areas.

6. IRRIGATE EFFICIENTLY
Don’t overwater. Use soaker hoses and drip irrigation to water deeply and encourage deep root growth.

7. MAINTAIN YOUR LANDSCAPE PROPERLY
Keep irrigation systems running properly. Avoid the lush, thirsty plant growth that results from over-fertilization.
